Grief in Tragedy

Job 17:7-8

7 My eyes have grown dim with grief;
my whole frame is but a shadow.
8 The upright are appalled at this;
the innocent are aroused against the ungodly.

Today I find myself greatly saddened over the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newton, CT.  At the time of writing this post there were 27 who died at the hands of two gunmen, one who was killed and the other who got away.

As I reflect upon this and the other shootings over the past several weeks and months I can't help but to understand how some people believe that gun control would be the answer.  It would be too easy to blame tragedies like these on guns.  But several research studies, including this one from Harvard, show that gun control has little or no effect on violent crime rates.

I am not writing this about gun control.  But I am writing this about the deterioration of our society.  My husband and I both grew up on homes where the rifles and shotguns were not locked up.  In my home they were right out in the open, in my parents' room.  For my husband, they were in a close.  Neither home had them under lock and key.  My husband and I grew up understanding the purposes and dangers of these guns.  And we were taught gun safety and the correct use of them.  We were also taught the sanctity of human life.

I am 40 years old and my husband is 42.  In just our generation alone we have witnessed society, as a whole, deteriorate into chaos.  I can only imagine how much more the older generations have witnessed.  We live in a violent society who has only becoming more so.  The younger generations are growing up without strong parents who have strong morals based strong Biblical faith.  It's so easy to see how society comes crashing down when the foundations have been removed.

The only way to correct this downward spiral is for all of us to return to God's Biblical truths, to put others ahead of self and to, once again, take full responsibility for our own actions.  Unfortunately, I don't see that happening.  The Bible tells us that society will continue to decline until He sets up his kingdom.  In the meantime I will pray, draw closer to God, and hope that I can plant some seeds of His truth in the hearts of people.

Psalm 34:18

18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
